IT WAS A BAD DAY AT THE COUNTY HOME...
I was finishing my visit playing to patients at the bedside, and as I looked down the long grey corridor I was struck by how little there was ‘of me’ and yet how great was the need.
This was the county healthcare facility where people who had no means and no family ‘ended up’. It was easy to let my feelings go and become overwhelmed by the unmet needs. Wheelchairs lined the hall and all eyes were on me as I was the most interesting ‘thing/event’ that had probably happened all morning. I didn’t let it go to my head as I reminded myself that I was the ONLY thing/event that had happened that morning. And then the idea was born….why not mentor the staff how to use recorded music to relieve pain and anxiety so they could access this powerful resource 24/7?

Fast forward to the present where we have brought THE BLESSINGS OF MUSIC MENTORING WORKSHOP nationallly to hospices, hospitals, pastoral care organizations, churches and nursing homes. Thousands have learned how to present live or recorded therapeutic music to their patients.
The seminar introduces caregivers to the nature and science of music, its effects upon the human physiology, the historic uses of healing music, what makes music 'therapeutic', how to choose music for different types of patients, and ideas on how to integrate music into clinical practice.
Anecdotes and music samples (live and recorded) are used to illustrate the effects of music and caregivers are encouraged to use music with other pain treatment modalities with no contraindications.
We enjoy ourselves and strive to make the workshop interesting and fun. People leave with tools they can use immediately in their practice or at home. Participants discover:
- The nature of music and exactly how it affects our physiology
- How to introduce therapeutic music into clinical practice
- What patient benefits they can expect
- How a live therapeutic music program can benefit their facility
- Effective ways of using music with dementia patients
- What types of music are effective for end of life patients
- How to choose other types of music to reduce pain and anxiety
